Packaging / Design

This case comes off as a surprisingly good looking design (even though Japanese releases in general are of very high standard this feels a lot cooler than I was expecting it to be).

The digipack may seem like your regular 2 disc foldout but the big surprise is that the digitrays (the plastic parts) are in fact the doublesized thick style digitrays that you normally only see on single disc releases every now and then (and even then they're not to common).

To be honest I don't think I've ever seen a 2 disc digipack presented with the thicker type digitrays but it certainly works wonders and really gives it a big and sturdy look, which makes it feel even more luxurious.

This obviously calls for a slipcase much larger than normal and here the bar has been raised even higher as it's not even a regular cardboard slipcase but rather a big sturdy hard cardboard box.

The digipack is all glossy, while the outer box comes with a matte black surface. This may also be the only down part of this case, as the surface of the box feels very easily stained, and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people will end up with unremovable fingerprints all over it.

Also in the case is a single sheet chapter index with a high quality image on the back (see clearly on image # 9).

Disc contents / Extras

This release has been labeled 10th Anniversary Edition and I for one was expecting a whole lot more. Now, to my knowledge, this film hasn't really been released on dvd in Japan before but even so, a 2 disc edition really had me hoping for something above normal, especially since this film has only had single disc releases all over the world so far.

But as it turns out, this release is exactly the same as the older ones. Or even worse actually. The only extras available are the same old junk that we've seen all over the world so many times allready. Not even an audio commentary has been added for this so called anniversary.

Granted, the extras are okay but for such a well made set in general, it just strikes me as insane that there's not a shred of new material on it.

So in conclusion, a true fan of this film should certainly consider this release for the packaging alone, but as far as the discs are concerned I would suggest everyone to keep your eyes peeled for the upcoming R1 special edition (released on the 23d of september, 2008), which will include an audio commentary and a whole bunch of other new features.

Sidenotes

For some reason the barcode is printed with a the letter T in the beginning. This seems like a rather odd detail but it would appear to be part of the actual code as there are only 12 numbers following it.
