Packaging / Design

This is a very nice and well made digipack. The artwork is just stunning even if a little embossing would have made it look a lot better. There's a ot of detail to the imagery and you really have to give it good look to realise just what lays hidden in the backgrounds and such.

Disc contents / Extras

Even though this edition misses out on the english subtitiles it's so jammed full of extras missing from all the other releases that's it's worth a go just for supplements. First up; this set includes TWO cuts of the film; both the original 96 min theatrical cut, but also the exclusive 96 min director's cut which add a couple more scenes to the film along with interesting audio commentary by writer/director Roger Avery.

Now, most extras have forced french subs but the audio varies with the people featured. There's a making of documentary running for about 1 hour (!) featuring forced french subs. This documentary comes with both english and french actors, producers and what have you, but there is no dubbing of any kind so there's still a lot of interesting material even if you don't speak french.

There are four extra interviews that are not part of any featurette. Three of these (featuring Eric Stoltz, Roger Avery and Julie Delpy) are in english but one (featuring Jean-Hugues Anglade) is in french.

And finally there's 3 deleted scenes presented in full screen along with some bonus trailers and the original trailer for the film itself. To summarise I would suggest purchasing this edition just for supplements and if you still feel like you need to to see the film with subs, just pick up a cheap copy from any other region for this purpose alone.

Sidenotes

Though this is an american movie, it's set in france and contains a number of lengthy scenes conducted in french. The French subtitles are optional when watching the film, but they are FORCED on the extras (disc 3). The Shooting Zoe documentary (with forced subs) is a mixed bag of behind the scenes footage and interviews combined. Some of the interviews are with the french producer Samuel Hadida and other french actors. These interviews have NO subtitles at all. All in all there's still a lot of great coverage in english during the documentary.

This edition includes both the regular 96 min cut of the film AND the 99 min director's cut. So far, this is the only release with the 99 min cut present.
