Packaging / Design

Oh man, this was a tough one. I'd rate this an 8 but it's really on the verge of a 7 for a very simple reason (and that's why I just degraded it to a 7). Namely the front cover. As you can see, the front cover does feature a quite nice alternate artwork not really seen on any other region. Also, the red Predator logo (which is featured on all sides but the back and bottom) is made in a shine chrome-like holographic-kinda something material. This detail is very nice and it reflects the light in an amazing way.

But as I said, it's all really nice except for one detail. Tjere's that weird little sticker-like thing on it that says "4-disc box set containing the special editions dvds of Predator & Predator 2". What the fuck is that? And you may say 'Well, come on, it IS just a sticker, right?', but you're wrong! It's not a sticker! It's a fucking huge mistake! The bloody thing is printed on there - that's all there is to it. And the more I think about it it pisses me off, so let's move on shall we?

Opening this set up you'll notice the unusually styled double slipcase effect. I've seen slipcases sliding on in various ways but never quite in this combo, and they're both sturdy and nice to look at. The odd shape of the open sides might feel a bit weird at first but you'll get used to it.

Apart from the slipcases we get 2 regular double-disc keepcases. One of which (Predator) would be exclusive to this set as the seperately sold special edition comes in a digipack. Apart from that, the individual case artork looks pretty much the same as the separate SEs.

In the end, I guess this set look pretty good but I think the front could have been made better. Apart from the big red commercial-like "4-disc box set" shit you'll also note that the sky in the picture seems to be cloned on the upper part of the image, making it looks very fake. This feels strange to me as the bottom part is obviously not symmetrical. It just bugs me that they didn't put a bit more work into the cover. And I guess the keepcase-designs would have looked a lot better if they had been re-made to fit the look of the outer box as apposed to still looking like they do when sold separetaly. But the structure and form of the set is very nice and experimental, making it a fresh breeze in an otherwise quite dull world of slipcases.

Disc contents / Extras

These two special editions are different but also alike in some ways. They mainly excist from a large number of smaller featurettes. And with that said, I'm not gonna go through every little thing they put in there but I will say this. Predator includes a lot of clips and interviews (easter eggs in some cases) full of humour and anecdotes from the cast and crew. The deleted scene mentioned is not to interesting as it only shows Arnold fleeing through the woods for a while and the predator chasing after him. Video-quality on this part is poor and the audio is missing on some parts.

Actually, come to think of it, picture-quality feels a bit poor overall on this set. There's quite a bit of grain in some seens and I'm not usually one to comment on these things but it IS noticable. However, as this is not a problem on just this edition or region I won't mention it to much.

Apart from that, I guess you could summarise it all by saying that the 2 discs are pretty packed; we get commentaries on both films and a variaty of featurette-segments. I wouldn't rate the thing 'super-packed' but it's definetely shelf-worthy.

Disc-specs are identical to the separetally sold special editions for both films.

Thanks for this review! The only place on the net that shows pictures of the box itself. :)
